ASF resurface in South Korea
South Korea reported last week its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in domestic pigs since October 2019. The virus was confirmed in the Gangwon province, where 3 pigs were found dead on a farm. According to the Korean news agency Yonhap, the country issued a special 48-hour travel ban to livestock-related facilities in the province. Subsequently, according to the ministry, the country has proceeded to slaughter about 1,500 pigs this Friday, within a radius of 10 km from the infected farm.
South Korean authorities expressed their concern earlier this year about new outbreaks in pig farms due to the fact that the disease was still present in wild boar population. Since the beginning of 2020, South Korea has reduced pork imports from major suppliers as the foodservice sector was impacted by the coronavirus crisis Also, the country was stockpiling frozen pork since 2019 and reserves were poured in the domestic market.
