Austria's pig population continues to decline

Statistics Austria published updated figures this week on the country's pig population. According to these figures, a total of 2.48 million pigs were kept in Austria as of December 1, 2025. Compared to the previous year, this represents a decrease of 2.2%, or 55,400 animals.

Austria's pig population continues to decline

According to the latest survey results from Statistics Austria, the pig population in Austria decreased to a total of 2.48 million animals as of December 1, 2025. This represents a decline of 2.2%, or 55,400 animals, compared to the previous year. The number of piglets and young pigs fell by 1.6% to 1.22 million animals, while the breeding pig population decreased by 2.9% to 198,700 animals. The fattening pig population declined by 2.7% to 1.06 million animals.

In a detailed comparison, the number of piglets decreased by 2.3% to 600,600 and the number of young pigs by 1.0% to 621,300. Among fattening pigs, the number of animals weighing 50 to under 80 kg declined by 2.2% to 501,300 and the number of animals weighing 80 to under 110 kg decreased by 4.8% to 420,600, while the number of fattening pigs weighing at least 110 kg increased by 2.4% to 136,600. There were 0.1% fewer gilts (40,900) and 3.4% fewer older sows (154,900). The total number of pregnant sows was 136,600 (-2.2%).

The number of farms keeping pigs on the reporting date decreased by 4.7% to 15,800. At the same time, the average stocking density increased slightly from 153 pigs per farm (2024) to 157 pigs per farm.
The three federal states most important for pig farming in Austria - Upper Austria, Lower Austria, and Styria—accounted for 94.1% of the total pig population, as in the previous year.
