Avian flu spreads through southeast Europe
More than 50,000 turkeys in a Hungarian farm have been culled after an outbreak of bird flu (H5N8 type), reports Reuters. The virus has been reported first in Poland at the end of December but it has spread to Slovakia and now, Hungary.
The country's National Food Chain Safety Authority (NEBIH) confirmed that the birds are to be culled and other precautionary measures implemented, such as transport restriction in the area, to contain the spread of the infection.
The outbreak was reported at a large turkey farm in northwestern Hungary, close to the Slovakian border. The neighboring country has discovered last week the same type of virus in 22 birds in backyard poultry. Several farms in Poland have been affected by the virus in the last couple of weeks.
