Bulgaria reports another bird flu outbreak
Another bird flu outbreak has been reported by the Bulgarian sanitary watchdog. 40,000 birds have been culled on a laying hen farm in the southeastern village of Krivo Pole. This is the fifth bird flu outbreak reported by the Bulgarian authorities since the beginning of the year.
The agency said the farm had been hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza type A, but did not disclose the strain of the disease. The predominant strain in Europe at present is H5N8. Some 160,000 ducks and 154,000 hens have been culled at four other farms in the Balkan country since February as authorities try to contain the spread of the disease, informs Reuters.
This year, 26 European countries have been impacted by the disease, with almost half of them reporting bird flu outbreaks in commercial farms. The largest impact was felt by poultry producers in France.
