ChilePork concludes its intense promotional agenda in Asia in Shanghai
Within the framework of SIAL Shanghai 2026—one of Asia's most important food fairs—ChilePork held its traditional annual event on May 17th in the Chinese city, reinforcing the presence of Chilean pork in one of its most important markets. The event brought together more than 70 representatives from Chinese pork importers, media representatives, and representatives from 100% of Chile's pork exporting companies.
The event was attended by Gonzalo Figueroa, Chile's Consul General in Shanghai; Alberto Cañas, Commercial Attaché; and Llacolén Lefever, Chile's Agricultural Attaché in China. Representatives from ChilePork were also present and highlighted the attributes that have allowed Chile to establish itself as a reliable, long-term supplier to Asian markets.
During the event, the positioning that Chile has built in Asian markets was highlighted, thanks to a sector focused on quality, supply stability and the development of long-term commercial relationships, attributes that today allow Chilean production to differentiate itself in an international scenario marked by logistical pressures, animal diseases and greater regulations for the global food trade.
“China is a very important market for our sector, and this tour has been a key opportunity to further strengthen a relationship of more than 15 years based on trust and collaboration. Chile has proven to be a serious, reliable supplier with high sanitary standards, attributes that are fundamental for our trading partners today,” said Pía Barros, Communications and Marketing Manager of ChileCarne.
Chile and China have maintained diplomatic relations for 56 years, and 2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with China and also the first Latin American nation to sign and modernize a Free Trade Agreement with the Asian giant.
Asia is the main destination for Chilean pork, with China remaining the largest market by volume and the second largest by value, with shipments exceeding US$159 million in 2025. That same year, Chile exported 328,000 tons of pork - equivalent to 56% of its total production—for a value close to US$700 million to more than 35 markets.
Competitive strengths and health confidence
In line with the above, the logistical advantage of Chile as a country directly connected to Asia through the Pacific was highlighted, allowing for more efficient transit times and more stable maritime routes, thus favoring the cold chain, the shelf life of products and greater predictability for importers.
Another key point was the compliance and robustness of the Chilean production system. In the last three years, the sector has passed 100% of the audits conducted by highly demanding markets such as the United States, the European Union, China, South Korea, and the Philippines. Furthermore, the strict biosecurity protocols implemented by the sector were highlighted, allowing Chile to maintain its status as a country free of diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and PRRS.
In this context, the joint work between the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), ChileCarne and the Chinese health authorities was also highlighted in order to advance in sanitary zoning mechanisms and strengthen export protocols, with the aim of safeguarding the continuity of trade in the face of possible health contingencies and to continue consolidating trust between both countries.
In this way, the promotional tour developed by ChilePork and ProChile in Asia allowed to further strengthen the relationship with importers and strategic partners in the Chinese market, reaffirming Chile's position as a reliable, competitive and long-term supplier for the Asian food industry.
