China reports H5N6 bird flu outbreak

On 12 April, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture reported that a highly pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza - H5N6 - was found in wild birds in the northeastern province of Liaoning, marking the first confirmed cases of the disease in the country this year.
There were 291 wild birds at the outbreak site - a forest park in the provincial capital, Shenyang - and 11 of them died of the disease, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in a statement. The remaining 280 birds were slaughtered as part of the emergency response measures, he added. The latest case of H5N6 in China reported by the ministry was on a poultry farm in southwestern Sichuan province in February 2020.
Some other Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea have been hit hard by bird flu outbreaks this year, forcing the officials to cull millions of birds. A similar situation was reported in the EU market, with France, Germany, Poland, and the Netherands being impacted by the Avian Influenza. Recently, FAO issued an AI alert for African states.
