EU pig production increased again in 2025

Pork

The number of pigs slaughtered in the EU has increased again in the last two years. Pig slaughterings in the European Union increased for the second year in a row in 2025. Spain, in particular, is driving this growth. Despite the increase, the level remains below that of previous years. A stabilization of livestock numbers suggests a slight recovery in the sector.

EU pig production increased again in 2025

According to the latest figures from Eurostat, a total of 227.2 million animals were slaughtered between January and December, 2.3% more than in 2024. Despite this renewed increase, however, the level remains significantly below the slaughter figures of previous years.

With almost a quarter of all EU slaughterings, Spain remains the leading producer. Slaughtering there increased by 4.4% year-on-year. Germany continues to hold second place, with slaughter figures remaining almost stable compared to 2024. Most major producing countries also recorded increases, with only a few experiencing slight declines.

In addition to the number of pigs slaughtered, the amount of pork produced also increased. This rose by 3.3% to approximately 21.8 million tons in 2025. The larger increase compared to the number of slaughtered pigs is due to higher carcass weights.

After several years of significant declines in pig populations in the EU, which also led to a decrease in slaughter numbers, populations have now stabilized in many member states. As a result, EU pork production has recently recovered slightly.
