FMD spreads through Indonesia
An outbreak of foot and mouth disease has spread to several regions in Indonesia forcing the government to order the import of 3 million doses of vaccines. More than 151,000 animals have been infected by the illness across 18 provinces and 180 regencies, up from over 20,000 in early June, according to government data. Local vaccines are currently in production and should be ready by the end of August, the ministry said in the statement on Monday. The government has set up a task force to implement measures to curb the spread of the disease.
Nevertheless, by the end of August, the vaccines imported will be used to safeguard the national inventory. In July, Indonesia must be prepared for Eid al-Adha festival, when cows and goats are slaughtered for religious sacrifices. Almost 1.5 million animals were slaughtered last year, according to official data. Still, for the next months, meat imports can surge as the country has a self-sufficiency rate of 70% in beef. The main suppliers in the market are Australia, New Zealand, India and the US.
