Germany: Annual figures for husbandry practices confirm the animal welfare trend
The current figures clearly demonstrate that the supply – particularly for turkey meat – is continuing to shift from husbandry level 2 to husbandry level 3 (+13.3%), representing a significant step towards higher animal welfare standards. At the same time, husbandry level 2 for pork remains at a very high and stable level (75.2% at the service counter; 86.3% on self-service shelves). The newly introduced husbandry level 5 organic label, launched in 2024, has already achieved a considerable market share for beef (14.1%) and for milk and dairy products (12.8% and 7.7%, respectively).
The published figures are based on the sales volumes of the private label brands of the participating food retailers and show a clear trend: The food retail sector is continuously expanding its range of products in the animal welfare-oriented husbandry levels.
