Germany: Cases of ASF on the Rhine island of Mariannenaue

Further cases of African swine fever (ASF) have occurred in the Rheingau-Taunus district. On the Mariannenaue, an island in the Rhine between Eltville in Hesse and Ingelheim in Rhineland-Palatinate, a total of three wild boar carcasses tested positive for the ASF virus. The results of further sampling are still pending.

After a dead animal was found near the river between Eltville-Erbach and Eltville-Hattenheim, the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and Environment immediately launched intensive search measures in the area - including on the Mariannenaue. Search teams with carcass-testing dogs were brought there with the support of the police.

Due to the positive cases in the Rheingau-Taunus district, the so-called restricted zone II, which entails restrictions on hunting and animal husbandry, must be expanded. The construction of further tactical electric fences to prevent the spread towards the vineyards and the hinterland forest has already begun. The exact course of the new restricted zone II will be defined in the coming days in close coordination with Rhineland-Palatinate, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the European authorities. In addition to the existing core area around the outbreaks in the Groß-Gerau district, another, smaller core area is to be set up around the sites in the Rheingau.
