India reports H5N1 bird flu outbreak
The World Animal Health Organization (OIE) confirmed an H5N1 bird flu outbreak in India. The case was reported at a poultry farm in Chhattisgarh, where it killed 5,634 out of 21,060 birds. The rest of the birds will be culled to stop the disease from spreading, according to India Today.
H5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds called avian influenza (or "bird flu"). Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza occur occasionally, but it is difficult to transmit the infection from person to person. When people do become infected, the mortality rate is about 60 per cent.
In 2019, Nepal and Taiwan were also affected by severe cases of avian flu that reduced the performance of the sector in both countries and increased the rate of poultry imports.
