Indonesia aims to become a second Vietnam for the pangasius global market
The ban applied by Indonesia on pangasius imports had increased the domestic production in the last two years, as Nilanto Perbowo, Director General of Fishery Products Competitiveness Strengthening at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, mentioned to Asian Agribiz.
"This industry continues to show promising growth thanks to the import ban. This year, we target production to reach 604,587 tons", declared the official.
Since the imports have been eliminated pangasius production in Indonesia grew from 339,069 tonnes to 437,111 tonnes, between 2015-2016. Also, the local consumption increased by 21.9% from 2014 to 2017, according to the government data. Majority of Indonesia’s pangasius production is exported to Thailand (44%), Japan (15%) and Myanmar (14%). In 2016, Vietnam, the largest producer of pangasius in the world has reported a record production of 1.2 million tons.
