JBS points to demand for functional nutrition as a driver of growth in the food sector

The CEO of JBS highlighted that food security has become central to the strategy of several countries.

Brazil should assume a central role in the global expansion of protein consumption in the coming years, supported by production scale, efficiency gains and technological advances in the field. This assessment was made by the global CEO of JBS, Gilberto Tomazoni during the 12th Brazil Investment Forum, promoted by Bradesco BBI, in São Paulo.

According to the executive, the growth in demand for protein has ceased to be a cyclical trend and has begun to reflect a structural change, driven by factors such as food security, demographic changes and the growing search for foods with higher nutritional value. “We are facing a consistent transformation in consumption patterns, with more focus on health, energy and quality of life,” he said.

The statement was made in the panel “Leading Brazil's Protein Industry: Perspectives from the Companies That Feed the World” , which brought together leaders from the sector to discuss perspectives for the Brazilian protein industry and its role in global supply.

The CEO of JBS highlighted that food security has gained centrality in the strategy of several countries, driving investments in local production, especially in the Middle East. For him, however, this movement does not diminish Brazil's relevance as a competitive and essential global supplier to complement international supply. “ Local production is a reality. But that doesn't eliminate Brazil's role, because you never close the equation by producing exactly everything the market wants ,” he said.

Speaking about Brazilian competitiveness, Tomazoni highlighted that the country has a rare structural advantage in the animal protein sector. In addition to possessing the largest commercial cattle herd in the world, Brazil still has significant room to increase its productivity, especially through advances in genetics, nutrition, and management. “ Brazil will be a leader in beef, because it has the herd, because it has the land, and because there is still a very large opportunity for productivity gains. ”

For the executive, this productive advancement will be decisive in meeting a global demand that tends to grow consistently in the coming years. In Tomazoni's assessment, protein consumption has ceased to be merely a market trend and has come to reflect a structural transformation in eating habits, driven by a generational shift and the growing search for health, energy, and quality of life.

In this scenario, Tomazoni pointed to a new avenue of growth for the industry: the development of so-called superproteins, with applications focused on functional nutrition, well-being, and long-term health. According to him, JBS believes in the advancement of solutions based both on natural protein and on biotechnology routes capable of customizing compounds with specific functions.

An example of the Company's investment in this area is the recent inauguration of JBS Biotech in Florianópolis (SC). This advanced biotechnology center is dedicated to the development of science applied to the production chain, to create and add value to food production. “ We believe there are two paths: the path of natural protein, with increased productivity, and the path of functional protein ,” explained the executive.
