More than 15,000 cattle affected by FMD in South Africa
The first assessment of Food and Mouth Disease outbreak that was reported in Vhembe district in Limpopo shows that more than 15,000 cattle are affected, according to the Department of Agriculture in South Africa.
By now, the outbreak leads to banned imports of livestock from South Africa by neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini and Namibia.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture are describing the situation "worse than expected" and expressed concerns about the money the country is losing over the halting of meat exports. The area has been quarantined and further assessments will be made to determine if cattle need to be culled.
