New ASF outbreaks in two Romanian farms
16,000 pigs have been culled in Galati county, in Romania, close to the eastern border with the Republic of Moldavia. The outbreaks appeared on two large pig farms in the county and all animals have been culled. According to vets, animals on farms have been infected through contaminated feed by wild boars. All pork products delivered in the market have been recalled and a quarantine zone has been instituted. So far, no case of ASF has reported in other industrial farms or in backyard farms in the county. The remaining pig population in industrial farms in Galati county is around 11,000 head. In the last two years, Romania's dependency on pork imports surged due to the ASF epidemic from 55% to more than 70%. Most of the pig meat imported are coming from Germany, Spain, Denmark, Italy and Belgium. 15 European countries are fighting against the disease, with only the Czech Republic being declared ASF-free at the end of 2018.
