New seafood centre to be open in Oslo Airport
Oslo Airport is to receive a new seafood centre that is supposed to open in the next three years. In 2017, more than 90,000 tonnes of Norwegian fish and seafood was delivered to other countries through air cargo services and this year the volume could reach 230,000 tonnes.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) and Sjømatterminalen AS to operate a new Seafood Center at Oslo Airport. The facility will handle up to 250,000 tonnes of seafood annually and has been designed to meet industry requirements for cool chain logistics and innovation, reports Seafood Source magazine.
"The Seafood Center at Oslo Airport will increase the competitiveness of Norwegian seafood globally and industrialize the handling. With an experienced international handler as WFS, we believe Oslo Airport will increase its competitive advantage as the preferred cargo hub in Northern Europe", explained Martin Langaas, director of cargo at Avinor Oslo Airport.
Construction of the facility is expected to commence in April 2019, with a view to opening in 2021.
"Our terminal will be a game changer in the handling of seafood as air cargo and be an important part of ensuring the future growth of one of Norway’s most important industries," said John Batten, executive vice-president cargo EMEAA at WFS.
