The US seizes 454 tonnes of pork smuggled from China

Federal agents have confiscated 454 tonnes of pork smuggled from China in an operation that took place in a New Jersey port, informs National Hog Farmer. The pork arrived in more than 50 shipping containers over the past few weeks to the port in Newark, hidden in containers of ramen noodles and laundry detergent, according to official sources.
"Agriculture specialists made a critical interception of these prohibited animal products, and stopped them from entering the US before they could potentially cause grave damage", declared Troy Miller, director of Customs & Border Protection field operations in New York/Newark, during a press conference. The confiscated products will be incinerated, he mentioned.
The US never had any cases of African Swine Fever (ASF), a disease that is currently present in Europe and South Asia, including China. Even if the virus does not affect humans is deadly for pigs and boars and represent an economic danger for the industry as there is no vaccine for it. Also, Canada is stepping up the efforts to keep the disease out of the country with help from detector dogs. $31 million will be invested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food in the next five years to allow the addition of 24 detector dog teams.
