Vall Companys enters the rabbit meat market
Vall Companys, a Spanish family-owned agri-food group, intends to diversify its production and to enter the rabbit meat market. The group used one of its subsidiaries, Avigal, to purchase the Curnican plant located in Celanova, province Ourense.
The facility has its own farm and slaughterhouse with an annual capacity of three million rabbits. The global market volume for rabbit meat will reach 1.8 million tonnes by the end of 2025 as the current trend pattern shows an expansion of 2.3% CAGR.
China was the main market for rabbit meat in the last couple of years, accounting for 62% (925,000 tonnes) of the world's total consumption (1.5 million tonnes), followed by North Korea (154,000 tonnes) and Egypt (57,000 tonnes).
In terms of production, China leads the top (932,000 tonnes), accounting for 63% of the world's rabbit meat production. North Korea ranks second (154,000 tonnes), while Spain came third with a production of 57,000 tonnes and a 3.9% market share.
Last year, the consumption of rabbit meat in Spain was 1.27 kilos per inhabitant. A report issued by the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Services mentions a “continuous decline” in the consumption of rabbit meat in the EU which is linked to changes in consumer habits towards convenience foods and the increased perception of the rabbit as pets. Since 2018, Two interprofessional associations from Spain and Portugal, INTERCUN and ASPOC, are the beneficiaries of €4.8 million funding campaign supported by the EU for promoting rabbit meat consumption.
