Vietnam urges pig farmers to rebuild their herds
ASF crisis in Vietnam may slow down in the coming months, according to government officials, and pig farmers in the country are urged to rebuild their herds to respond to higher pork consumption that is expected from January. Since February, the disease has spread in all 63 provinces of the country wiping out 5 million pigs, or 18% of the national swine inventory. Nevertheless, Vietnamese officials are confident that the spread of the virus is going to slow down. "Farmers’ efforts to enhance hygienic conditions on farms have helped put a brake on the spread", the head of the Vietnamese Department of Livestock Production told Reuters.
Vietnamese government officials say the outbreak “has initially been contained and showing signs of slowing down,” but didn’t offer any extra details. They’re also encouraging larger-size pork farms that meet hygiene requirements to expand their pig production efforts. Since March, pork prices in Vietnam have increased by 70%, as the country was forced to import more to cover the domestic demand.
