Vietnam's tuna exports increased by 13% in Q1
VASEP says that exports of fresh/live/frozen/dried tuna have seen a decline of 16%, still, exports of other tuna products increased compared to 2017.
Sales of frozen tuna loins/fillets (HS code 0304) continued to take a large share of 49%, followed by canned tuna with 28%.
Eight important tuna importing markets accounted for 88% of Vietnam's total tuna export value. These markets included the U.S, the EU, Israel, ASEAN, Japan, Canada, Mexico and China. Analysts at VASEP say most of these markets witnessed good growth, except for the US, Canada and Mexico.
Although the US continues to be Vietnam's top importer of tuna, with shipments that accounted for 30% out of the country's total tuna exports between January and March this year, there was a decline of 8.4% compared to year-ealier levels. Vietnam's tuna exports to the US in the mentioned period totaled $40.8 million.
"Although Vietnam's other processed tuna exports to the U.S increased by 164% over the same period last year, with the share of 8% in the total export value, this didn’t offset for the decrease in the total exports," VASEP's analysis read.
On the other hand, Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU continued the upward trend. According to VASEP, in the first quarter of 2018, Vietnam exported tuna worth $34.5 million to the EU, up by 25% compared to the first quarter from 2017.
Another positive evolution of Vietnam's tuna exports was reported on the Japanese market. In Jan-Mar this year reached US$6.2 million, up 27% over the same period in 2017.
Still, the exports of fresh/live/frozen/dried tuna to Japan decreased by 95% over the same period while sales of other tuna products of Vietnam to the market had grown well.
