Danish Crown Foods plans to move food production from Aalborg to Østerbro
The production of food products, which currently takes place at the factory in Aalborg on Østerbro, will in future take place at other Danish Crown factories. The recommendation is based on an assessment that the future production of meatballs and related dishes is best placed at other factories with good development opportunities.
"We are facing a major investment in a new production facility for our ready-to-eat meatballs, and in this connection we had to decide where the production should be located in the future. So far, it has been in Aalborg city center, but overall it makes the most sense to move the production out of the city, where there is the necessary space and the development opportunities we need," says Karolina Henriksen, Executive Vice President of Danish Crown Foods.
Danish Crown has an ambition to make even more convenience food in the future, which makes everyday life easier for many in a busy everyday life.
Part of that ambition is the new investment in meatball production machinery, where Danish Crown's factory in Vejle is considered the best location.
As a consequence of the investment, Danish Crown recommends that the entire production be gradually moved from the factory in Aalborg city center, and the factory is expected to cease producing food during 2028, and the land will be put up for sale.
The plan will now be discussed in the cooperation committee to ensure consultation with employees before the final decision is made.
There are 140 employees at the factory in Aalborg city center, most of whom are expected to be offered a position at another of Danish Crown's factories.
"It will be an ongoing process until 2028, and of course it affects all the skilled employees that we currently employ at the factory. Fortunately, we expect to be able to offer employment to most of the employees elsewhere in Danish Crown. For example, less than 10 kilometers from the factory in Aalborg, we have our sausage factory in Svenstrup, where we will continuously need labor," says Karolina Henriksen.
The factory in Aalborg has been located in Østerbro for nearly 60 years. It has been a well-known institution in the middle of the city, where it is now surrounded by Karolinelund, Østre Anlæg and dense housing. Therefore, the factory does not offer the major development opportunities that are crucial for Danish Crown in a changing food market.
"The factory in Aalborg has long traditions, but in line with the city's development, the location right in the center of the city is not optimal. It can be difficult to convert the factory when there are many considerations to take into account for neighbors, city life and the two nearby parks. This has of course also played into our considerations when we are going to make a major million-dollar investment in new production equipment," says Karolina Henriksen.
Danish Crown wants to offer the factory site in Aalborg for commercial development. However, the sales process has not yet begun.
