France bans producers from using meat-related words for vegetarian substitutes
Following the example set by the dairy industry from last year, the measure that protects meat product denominations was voted by MPs in order to stop vegetarian foodstuff producers from using words such as 'bacon', 'steak' or 'sausage for meat substitute products.
The bill introduced for the dairy industry's protection stipulates that any French company that uses dairy-related words for vegetarian and vegan products could receive a fine as much as €300,000.
The measure for meat denominations was first proposed by MP and farmer Jean-Baptiste Moreau who had argued that using terms such as 'vegetarian sausages' or 'plant burgers' is very misleading to consumers.
After the measure was approved, Jean-Baptiste Moreau said in a tweet that "it is important to combat false claims. Our products must be designated correctly: the terms of #cheese or #steak will be reserved for products of animal origin."
