PROVACUNO accelerates the opening of the South Korean market

The Spanish Beef Interprofessional Organization (PROVACUNO), with co-financing and collaboration from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has proposed a series of activities in South Korea. The aim is to raise awareness of the distinctive characteristics of Spanish beef and to begin establishing contacts with key players in the South Korean supply chain. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to develop a strategy to inform local authorities of the Spanish beef sector's interest in expediting the necessary authorization process to begin exports.

PROVACUNO accelerates the opening of the South Korean market

In this context, PROVACUNO is participating from June 9 to 12 in Seoul Food & Hotel 2026, the most important trade fair in South Korea and a meeting point for South Korean trade and other nearby countries, where the convergence of more than 55,000 professional visitors is expected.

As a complement to the presence at the trade fair, a meeting was held on June 8th, with representatives from the Korean retail chain at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel. During this presentation, information was provided on the specifics of the production system and the characteristics that define Spanish beef: guaranteed food safety, compliance with European production model standards regarding sustainability, animal welfare, traceability, health controls, and food safety controls (absence of growth promoter residues: hormones, antibiotics, and additives that unnaturally extend shelf life), ultimately resulting in a safe, juicy, tender, low-fat product with a premium flavor.

Opening of the South Korean market

Opening the South Korean market has become a top priority for the Spanish beef sector. South Korea is a market clearly focused on quality and food safety, and Spanish production is perfectly integrated into this context. Experience gained in the market by products from other Spanish sectors has confirmed that the Spanish production model provides South Korean consumers with the necessary confidence to make Spain a distinctive and desirable supplier.

Furthermore, South Korea is a major consumer of beef; its domestic production is limited, and consumption is very high and growing, resulting in imports exceeding 400,000 tons annually. Given this high and growing demand, and the prioritization of quality and safety above all else, South Korea presents a prime target market for the Spanish beef exports.

Currently, the process of opening up to this important country is in an advanced stage. The first inspection visit of the production model and facilities has already taken place and, according to the reports received, was satisfactory. Producers are currently negotiating with the South Korean authorities for the health certificate that will serve as the basis for exports. The final stage of the authorization process is pending: the eagerly awaited visit by the Korean authorities to the Spanish facilities, which will allow companies wishing to export to this country to obtain the necessary permits.
